Three things that are a waste of money for small business startups- and where they should invest instead
Feb 02, 2024I want to discuss the 3 things that are the biggest waste of money for small business owners, especially in the startup phase. Let's dive into it and talk about what you should be spending your time and money on instead.
1. Courses vs. One-on-One Support
Investing in courses may seem like a proactive step, but in the startup phase, it may not be the most effective use of your time and money. Instead of spending all your time learning, consider investing in one-on-one support or training. This way, you can receive targeted and specific advice that will move your business forward. Courses can be a time suck and may not provide the tangible results you need to progress in your business.
2. Systems: Is It Necessary Right Now?
While systems are important for your business, investing in complex and expensive systems in the early stages may not be the best use of your resources. It's okay for things to be a bit manual in the beginning, and you can always invest in systems as your business grows and generates income. Focus on driving traffic and attracting clients before making significant investments in systems.
3. Custom Website: Do You Really Need It?
A custom website is essential for your business, but in the startup phase, you may not need to invest in an expensive, bespoke website. Consider working with a web designer to create a templated build or using platforms like Squarespace or Wix to establish your online presence. As your business evolves, you can always invest in a custom website that aligns with your brand and goals.
Smart Investments for Small Business Startups
If I were starting my business over, there are three key investments I would prioritize:
- Hiring a coach or strategist for targeted and strategic guidance
- Investing in photography and branding to elevate my brand's professional appearance
- Implementing a calendar booking system, such as Calendly, to streamline client interactions
These investments can help small business startups establish a strong foundation without overspending on unnecessary expenses.
