The one boundary that changed my business
Mar 02, 2022The one motto that changed my business. Let me take you back to 2020, post-pandemic. In March we all go stuffed into lockdown, in April the world realised it needed to be online. I was juggling seeding, no child care, and every single cry for help that came across my desk.
The things people needed help with: creating a website, organising a virtual summit, transitioning to online delivery of their services, managing customer expectations, social media, newsletters, funnel creation, repackaging, crisis management… It was A LOT. I had more incoming enquiries in the month of April 2020 than my business had ever seen.
BUT. It was my lowest-grossing month of the year. Crazy hey?
You would think with the huge influx of enquiries and opportunities that would translate to dollar bills in my pocket.
The biggest problem? I was saying YES to everything. I was saying yes to consults, website builds, system setups, marketing funnels, mentoring, graphic design. EVERYTHING.
I also had an audit of my socials, I actually hadn’t been “selling” anything on my social media, so it was no wonder my audience felt like they could ask me for help with anything in any way.
Now don’t get me wrong, I realise the world was in crisis. And I am so glad I was able to help so many businesses, but it shouldn’t be at the detriment of my business, family or health.
I made the decision to bring in a coach. I needed to get laser-focused on what I was actually doing in my business. Coaching had been a part of my business since my businesses inception in 2016, but it wasn’t my bread and butter.
One thing I was really frustrated about was a business would bring me a tiny problem, but solving that problem wouldn’t actually propel them forward strategically. A website without a funnel and poor packaging is not going to change your business. Social media posts without clear calls to action are not going to effectively grow your business.
I decided to end my frustration and focus on just coaching businesses to grow through marketing, sales and strategy. The decision to stop every other service I was providing was a bit scary, but it was 100% necessary for my own growth and to better serve my clients.
My new motto became, “I don’t do random sh*t.” I started only working with clients in one of my very clear cut coaching packages, basically an intensive or a longer-term program. This created business continuity, but it also meant my promotions calendar was crystal clear. It allowed me to go deeper with my clients and serve them better.
I no longer felt stretched thin as though I had to say yes to everything. It became such a crystal clear boundary. I stopped feeling as though I needed to create new offers for every client. This in turn meant my quoting, onboarding and delivery systems were streamlined.
This single decision completely changed everything about my business.
