Anyone can call themselves a business coach

It is actually scary that coaching is such an unregulated industry. Anyone can wake up and call themselves a business coach. I see it often, people that just wake up and decide that they are now going to call themselves a coach. It is also entirely too easy to throw up a landing page and buy followers on Instagram.

You can be a coach without any sort of certification or industry standard. It is scary. Your coach could be a receptionist one day and then claim to be someone to help you hit six figures the next.

So how do you avoid working with these “overnight successes” that claim to get amazing results?

Do your homework. Stalk them. See if you can find out what their business past is. I think transparency is key when you are deciding to work with someone. My business past is full of small business- from working in my own family business growing up, to real estate through university, to an international oil and gas company, to a family owned manufacturing business, to a chamber of commerce. I always held roles in sales, marketing and management.

Since starting to work for myself 6 years ago, I have had a huge range of clients from boutiques to copywriters. I think this range and diversity of my own background as well as my clients has allowed me some serious insight to help my clients make strategic decisions.

Another way to avoid working with an unqualified person? Ask for referrals, I have had clients ask to get in touch with some of my past clients. And I’ve done it! It shows that I am confident in the results my clients get working with me. It also shows that I haven’t just made up some names and quotes for a sales page.

This is a huge level of trust to allow this kind of referral, but I think it once again allows for a deeper level of transparency.

Another sneaky way to check that a coach is legit- look at their followers. Do they look like they were bought? Empty profiles or names with a bunch of letters behind it. Those are some serious red flags that the followers may have been bought!

If you have done your research and you have a couple of coaches in mind, the next step would be to identify if the results that you are after is in their zone of genius.

Do you need NLP specialist? Or do you need someone with a strong sales background? Identify if your goals are achievable by working with this person. Keep in mind, coaches don’t have a magic wand. Work is still required. But if you are willing to put in the work, you can definitely get some great results!
