Shiny object syndrome, why it's holding you back

Shiny object syndrome is one of the things that holds SO many business owners back. Chasing sparkly new ideas and concepts, abandoning old ones in hopes of the new strategy overhauling their success.
Unfortunately, that isn’t how success works. Success is not about constant innovation and change. It is about consistency, repeating the same unsexy actions over and over again until success becomes inevitable.
It is so easy to become distracted by the latest craze or trend you are seeing on socials. But allowing these into your sphere of influence, and allowing them to detract from the core concepts and strategies that make success inevitable- could be absolutely detrimental.
That is the thing about solid and proven strategies, success is inevitable. It will happen because you have done all the actions. You know the results are coming- you just have to trust them.
This is where often the wheels fall off. When you are so deep in a strategy that you can’t see how the results are coming the shiny object coming at you from left field sounds so attractive. It is probably packaged as the perfect strategy -the thing you JUST NEED in your business. But what you can’t see for the weeds is that once you start implementing that strategy it is going to take just as long to see results.
And unfortunately, you abandoned the strategy that was working for you.
I truly believe flip-flopping from strategy to strategy is a major flaw so many business owners have within their own strategy.
This is what a shiny object syndrome strategy looks like
- Week 1: Focus on building an email list
- Week 2: Develop a new opt-in and begin sending a weekly email
- Week 3: Send weekly email and start promoting new opt-in
- Week 4: Send weekly email and start promoting new opt-in
- Week 5: Send a weekly email
- Week 6: Start doing a weekly livestream
- Week 7: Start doing a weekly livestream
- Week 8: Remember you were supposed to send a weekly email and start doing that. Forget the livestream you were doing weekly.
- Week 9: So frustrated that all of your livestreams and emails aren’t converting
- Week 10: Start blogging
- Week 11: Promote your new blog
- Week 12: Send a weekly email
Rather than the much less sexy version:
- Week 1: Focus on building an email list
- Week 2: Develop a new opt-in and begin sending a weekly email
- Week 3: Send weekly email and start promoting new opt-in
- Week 4: Send weekly email and start promoting new opt-in
- Week 5: Send a weekly email
- Week 6: Send a weekly email
- Week 7: Send a weekly email
- Week 8: Send a weekly email
- Week 9: Send a weekly email
- Week 10: Send a weekly email
- Week 11: Send a weekly email
- Week 12: The list has grown, conversions have started, and sending the weekly email is an easy habit. You have developed a system around it. Maybe it is time to start a livestream?
I truly believe every strategy needs 90 days to work. Nothing is going to work overnight or within a matter of weeks. That is why it is so easy to get distracted and discouraged by flashy strategies that look like they might return fast results.
There are no instant strategies in business. The overnight success that you see? They have been building a solid foundation for their success. Consistency leads to more consistency which then makes visibility and implementation easy.
If you are struggling with the strategy flip flop and find it impossible to nail down consistency, then it might be a good idea to bring in someone who is going to hold you accountable for your actions. Someone that is going to check in and double-check that you aren’t chasing a shiny object. Someone that is going to help you stay focused on the unsexy strategy of consistency.
