Never-ending to-do list? Time management is not your problem
Jun 20, 2021
The truth about time management.
I did a Facebook Live on this subject last year and it resonated with so many people.
There is no denying a majority of my audience and the women I work with are time-poor. Often juggling a family, a business, country living, and sometimes a farm or station. Busy women with very limited capacity.
If you are constantly struggling because the tasks on your to-do list never stop piling up. Now is the time to recognise something HUGE. A total game-changer for your business.
Your to-do list is NEVER going to be done as a business owner. If your to-do list is done. Your growth is going to look the same.
You need to have a fundamental shift in your mindset and be comfortable with the idea of a never-ending to-do list. Recognise it is part of owning a business.
Sure you can tie things up nicely for the day or week- but there is always going to be more work.
So rather than fighting the to-do list and accompanying overwhelm. Start looking at it with gratitude. Thankful that every task represents further growth and opportunity for your business.
So many times I see women jumping to the next big project management tool or time tracker, hoping to win back their time and close off their to-do list faster. But that’s never going to actually give you the result you want.
Working on your mindset is going to be a much more valuable use of your time compared to setting up another board in Trello or trialing a new CRM.
As you know I love systems and automation. Make sure you are using them to solve the right problems. They will never solve the discomfort of a never-ending to-do list.
This simple shift was so eye-opening for so many women. I continued to get positive messages in the months that followed the livestream.
Instead of searching for the perfect project management tool. I recommend you assess the priorities on your to-do list. Identify those needle-moving tasks or income-producing activities. Things that actually contribute to your income and aren’t just fill-in items.
I love a good old impact vs effort matrix (you can snag one here). This will help you assess where you can maximise the impact of the time you are spending in your business. It will also help you identify the lower-level tasks you might be able to outsource.
I think when you embrace outsourcing in your business this is another fantastic way to buy back your time. But it still doesn’t result in a completed to-do list. It just means you have a bit more time. You can read my blog here about Outsourcing for Growth.
IF YOU ARE STRUGGLING TO IDENTIFY YOUR INCOME-PRODUCING ACTIVITIES AND UNDERSTAND THE TASKS THAT HAVE THE MAXIMUM IMPACT ON YOUR BUSINESS, I’D LOVE TO HELP YOU.
