Don't boast in the bush
Mar 02, 2021
Humility. Every country person I know is full of it. Humble and honourable. Such fabulous traits.
But. Do you know what this does?
It means it’s bloody hard to say “I’m amazing and you need to buy this from me.”
Couple that with the small towns we live in. The feeling of everyone judging you for your prices and your services.
Half the time you want to vomit when you’re chatting about sales. The other half the time you’re getting heart palpitations.
Ladies, this is no place to grow a business from. And the transformation to set aside decades of conditioning to not brag or boast is not going to happen overnight.
How do we start working through these major mindset blocks?
1. Justify your value- to yourself
Write down all the experiences you have in your field. Why you really are amazing and the best in the industry. Write down any of the qualifications you have that contribute to your value. Put together all of your amazing client testimonials.
Any time you are feeling a twinge of self-doubt. Head back to this exercise and have it in your back pocket.
2. Have a super clear offer
If you don’t know exactly what you’re selling, no one is going to buy from you. Spell out exactly what it is you’re selling. Put the value first in a nice package with a neat little bow on it.
3. Serve. Serve. Serve. Then sell.
When you give freely with valuable content, you build a relationship. You’ll eventually reach a tipping point where after value comes the sales. Serve first then sell. This model makes selling so much more natural.
4. Pitch to the mirror
This sounds a bit silly. But talking out loud to yourself will use a different part of your brain than just thinking or writing. It’s also a heck of a lot easier to say something out loud when you’re alone than to freeze when you’re on the phone.
5. Understand your customer journey
I am a big believer in the customer journey. So you understand clearly the steps your audience is taking as they move from a cold audience to a warm audience. You can snag a customer journey worksheet here that will help you get started.
6. Personalise
I think we all became a bit tired of being chased around the internet by ads promising the next big thing to change your life. This is why I am such a big fan of maintaining as much human connection in the sales process as possible. I realise e-commerce it may not be achievable- but I think there is room to get creative here.
7. Don’t just say it once
This is where the wheels often fall off. You got the guts up to talk about whatever you’re selling. And you put it out there. Once. Now do it again. And again. It used to take 7 touchpoints to convert a sale. That has skyrocketed past 30 now.
